UAE VAT — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the VAT rate in the UAE?
The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, introduced on 1 January 2018 under Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017. Certain supplies are zero-rated (exports, international transportation, certain healthcare and education) and some are exempt (bare land, local passenger transport, certain financial services).
Who must register for VAT in the UAE?
Businesses with taxable supplies and imports exceeding AED 375,000 per year must mandatorily register for VAT with the FTA. Voluntary registration is available for businesses with taxable supplies above AED 187,500 per year. Failure to register on time results in FTA penalties.
How often must VAT returns be filed in the UAE?
Most UAE businesses file VAT returns quarterly, within 28 days of the end of each tax period. Large businesses may be required to file monthly. Returns are submitted through the FTA's EmaraTax portal, with VAT due paid simultaneously.
What is a VAT voluntary disclosure in the UAE?
A VAT voluntary disclosure allows UAE registered businesses to correct errors or omissions in previously submitted VAT returns. Proactive disclosure typically results in lower penalties than errors identified by the FTA during an audit.
What is an FTA VAT audit and how should businesses prepare?
An FTA VAT audit is a formal review of a business's VAT compliance, records, and tax returns. Businesses should maintain complete tax invoices and reconciled VAT returns for a minimum of 5 years. MSA Auditors provides pre-audit VAT health checks and audit defence support.
Can a business deregister from VAT in the UAE?
Yes. A UAE business may apply to deregister from VAT if its taxable supplies have fallen below AED 375,000 per year, or if it has ceased making taxable supplies. Any outstanding VAT obligations must be settled before deregistration is effective.
